SELF-REGULATION:PATHWAY TO LEARNING-APRIL 24, 2018; 8:30 am to 4:30 pm
Instructor:Kim Barthel OTR; Date: April 24, 2018; Kids Therapy Circle, St. Catharines, ON
This one-day workshop is an introduction to the elements of self-regulation and its profound influence upon learning in the classroom environment. Many children experience difficulty regulating their activity levels or energy and difficulty balancing their sensory systems, which can be disruptive to the learning environment and to social interaction. Strategies will be introduced to assist participants in
managing varying activity levels through curriculum activities and adaptations. Additionally, children may have difficulty regulating their emotions or mood states resulting in stress responses that often limit participation in learning tasks. Participants can learn to develop therapeutic relationships with their students to support the development of balance emotional states for optimum learning. Inattention, impulsivity and information retention are also functions that require meta-cognitive regulation
and require specific strategies of support. This one-day workshop will be lecture format with video
analysis for optimum learning.
The Participant will develop an understanding of: Strategies to adapt the classroom environment to support regulation. The science of movement as it supports regulation and learning. Learning theory and universal design education. Attunement and its effect on learning. Sensory processing intervention.
